Zero =? is a response to one of the International Society of Typographic Designer's 2020 brief 'The Significance of Numbers'.
This project explores the number zero, not only its numerical value (or lack thereof) but its contributions to our society. The adoption of zero changed not only our numerical system but has challenged us philosophically, intellectually and has contributed to the way we now communicate.

Not only is this the exploration of possibly the most important number of all, but also a celebration of all that it has done and will continue to do. No matter who you are, where you are and what you do, zero has ultimately impacted all of us.

Is zero the most important number? Explore 10 pivotal moments in our history where zero has played a significant role.
A timeline of 10 significant events with each frame pertaining to one of these significant events. The compilation of 11 transparent acrylic frames was inspired by Japanese artist Masayuki Tsubota’s ‘layer of self’; a beautifully layered sculpture. Rather than a typical timeline, each event is revealed as the user dismantles the object. The choice of materials that was used was important as it illustrates the project physically. The decision to use transparent acrylic magnetic frames and printing on acetate emphasised the overarching theme: zero has a value, it is so much more than a place-holder.
The grid system for the events is done so that each event has its own space — none overlapping one another. Once all stacked together, the separate events come together.
